What is n8n self hosted?

The Product

The whole of n8n.
On a server in full view.

What it is. n8n is an open-source workflow automation tool for APIs, databases, webhooks and AI models. Here it deploys as a one-click template onto a dedicated server we run, on SQLite or its own Postgres.

Who it is for. Teams who want unlimited executions and their API keys on a server they control, without building Docker, a reverse proxy and TLS themselves.

When to use it. When hosted automation pricing scales with your execution count or when your workflows touch data that cannot sit on a shared cloud.

n8n self hosted requirements

Edit Fields

What n8n needs and what we already provide.

Self hosted n8n needs a 4 GB server, a database, a reverse proxy and a TLS certificate. The template ships all four, so the only n8n hosting requirement you choose is the server size.

What runs on your n8n server

Execute Workflow

Two containers. One click.

n8n and its task runner run as two containers on your own project server, with SQLite in a volume, HTTPS in front and the encryption key pinned.

Your credentials survive redeployment

n8n encrypts every saved credential with one key. Upstream leaves that key inside the data volume, so losing the volume makes every credential unreadable. We pin it as a platform secret and inject the same key on every redeploy.

Webhooks work on the first deploy

Self hosted n8n needs N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL and WEBHOOK_URL pointed at your public HTTPS address. Otherwise webhooks resolve to localhost. We wire both at deploy time.

Hardened by default

Nodes cannot read server environment variables, bare Git repositories are disabled, settings-file permissions are enforced and proxy hops are configured.

How to self host n8n in 4 steps

Run

From zero to live.
No server to set up.

Four steps. No Docker file, no reverse proxy, no certificate to renew.

  1. Create a project

Name it and pick a server. 4 GB is enough for n8n. We provision it, no cloud account to connect. Six regions across Europe, North America and Asia.

  2. Add the n8n template

Add service → Template → n8n. Take SQLite or the Postgres variant for heavy execution volume. Six provisioning stages, about four minutes, then we email the URL and credentials.

  3. Claim the owner account · do it now

No admin password is set at deploy. n8n's first-run screen creates the owner, and the first visitor claims it. Open it before you share the link.

  4. Point your domain

Keep the wildcard subdomain or add your own: set DNS, verify a TXT record and HTTPS provisions and renews automatically. Then build.

Deploy n8n Step 1 starts in the console.

Managed n8n hosting: what we run and what you run

Merge

The honest split.

We manage the infrastructure. You own what happens inside n8n. This is managed hosting, not managed automation.

Upgrading self hosted n8n

Wait

Your version. Your timing.

Your version is your decision. We pin n8n to an exact image, currently n8n 2.10.2, so a restart or a redeploy always brings back the same software. A newer template build applies to new deployments; yours stays put until you move it.

To move to a newer n8n:

  1. Export your workflows, and your credentials in decrypted form, with n8n's own CLI over SSH.

  2. Deploy the n8n template again. New deployments get our newest tested build.

  3. Import both into the new instance, check a workflow runs, then move your domain across.

What you pay to run n8n here

Output

Server rates only. No execution meter.

You pay for the server and nothing else. A European 4 GB server is $0.02/hr, about $15 a month if you leave it running, billed hourly against prepaid credits. No per-execution, per-workflow, per-user or per-gigabyte fee.

$15.18 /mo at 730 hours European 4 GB server, $0.02/hr

What you pay forCost
European 4 GB project server$0.02/hr, $15.18/mo at 730 hours
n8n template, task runner, SQLite$0
Dedicated Postgres variantNo separate fee, shares the server, budget more RAM
HTTPS and custom domain$0
Bandwidth$0. Traffic is included
Daily server backupsOptional, +20% of server price

Monthly figures assume 730 hours at our lowest rate, which is in our European regions. Other regions run different machine types at their own rates, priced live in the calculator.

n8n Cloud bills per execution. A project server bills per hour, whatever your workflows do.

SQLite or Postgres for n8n?

Switch

Pick the variant at deploy time.

SQLite is the default and suits most teams. Take the Postgres variant for heavy execution volume or a large execution history. Pick when you add the template.

SQLite (default)Postgres variant
Best forScheduled jobs, moderate webhook trafficHeavy execution volume, large history
How to get itDefaultSelect when adding the template
Concurrent writesFine at typical loadsBetter

Extra costNoneNone

Postgres alone does not protect your credentials. Stock n8n keeps its encryption key in the data volume whichever database you choose, which is why we pin the key as a secret on both variants.

n8n self hosted limitations

Sticky notes

What this does not do.

Real constraints, easier to plan around than to discover.

  • 4 GB minimum. Smaller servers are refused at deploy.
  • Five executions at once. Code runs on a task runner capped at 5 concurrent.
  • SQLite suits light use. For heavy volume or a long execution history, pick Postgres at deploy time.
  • No queue mode. There are no Redis or worker containers, so n8n runs in its standard mode.
  • Sharing, projects and SSO need an n8n licence. In the free Community edition, teammates join as members, but each workflow and credential is visible only to its creator and the owner.
  • Claim the owner account first. n8n's signup window stays open until someone uses it.
  • No email until you add a mail provider. Invitations and password resets do not send until SMTP is configured.
  • Locked-down defaults. Nodes cannot read server environment variables, and bare Git repositories are disabled.
  • Security updates inside n8n are yours. We never change your version, so applying a patch is your call.
  • Five workloads per server. Apps, databases and one-click apps count together.
  • Nothing here in your way? Launch n8n

Frequently asked questions

Q&A
Can I self host n8n on Selfhost.dev?
Yes. The n8n template deploys in one click onto a dedicated server we provision and run. The webhook URL, the HTTPS certificate and a pinned encryption key are in place before the first boot, behind a default deny firewall with a health check every 60 seconds. Your workflows and your owner account are yours from there.
How is n8n billed on Selfhost.dev?
By the hour the server runs, drawn from prepaid credits, with no charge for the template. A European 4 GB server is $0.02/hr, about $15 a month if you leave it running. Nothing is metered per execution, per workflow, per user or per gigabyte of traffic, and the welcome credit covers your first hours. See pricing.
Do I set an admin password when I deploy n8n?
No. n8n creates its owner account on its own first-run screen, so the first person to open the URL becomes the owner and that window stays open until it is used. Open it yourself right after the deploy finishes, before sharing the address.
Will my n8n credentials survive a redeploy?
Yes. n8n encrypts every saved credential with one key, and stock n8n keeps that key in the data volume whether you run SQLite or Postgres. We pin the key as a platform secret on both variants, so each redeploy brings back the same key and your API keys and OAuth tokens keep working.
Can my team share workflows on self hosted n8n?
Teammates can join as members, but in the free Community edition each workflow and credential is visible only to the person who created it and the owner. Sharing, projects and SSO belong to n8n's paid Business and Enterprise plans. Invitation emails also need a mail provider configured first.
Does the n8n template run in queue mode?
No. The template runs n8n in its standard mode with an external task runner that executes up to five pieces of code at once. Queue mode needs Redis and separate worker containers, which the template does not include. For heavier volume, the Postgres variant handles concurrent writes better than SQLite.
Can I use my own domain with self hosted n8n?
Yes. Every deployment gets a working HTTPS address as soon as it is live, and you can add your own domain: set the DNS records, verify with a TXT record, and the certificate is provisioned and renewed for you. The editor and webhook URLs follow the domain automatically.
Can I deploy n8n with AI?
Yes. 216 MCP tools cover creating the project, deploying the n8n template, setting environment variables and managing domains, so an assistant in Claude, Cursor or any MCP client can launch the instance and look after it from your editor. The same tools work for every other one-click app on the platform. Explore the MCP server.
What happens if my credit balance reaches zero?
If you have a card on file or have topped up before, the server is powered off rather than deleted and held for 24 hours, and adding credit in that window starts it again. Welcome-credit-only servers are deleted at zero. We email you either way, so export your workflows as JSON now and then.
