AI in Selfhost.dev
AI that helps you run your stack, with the limits written down.
Two places, three tools. In the console, Ask AI explains and opens the right screen. Talk to Database, inside it, answers questions about your PostgreSQL data. In your editor, the MCP server gives your agent 216 tools across 32 modules to do the work.

Ask AI, in the console
Type what you want.
It opens the right screen.
Ask AI sits in the console’s sidebar, on the empty Home and behind Cmd or Ctrl+K. Ask in your own words and it answers with cards that open the right page with the details filled in. Nothing is created, deployed or deleted until you press the button yourself.
It answers from your account
- The cheapest server or database for what you need, priced the way the deploy and create screens price it
- What an app needs and whether a size is enough for it
- How long a deploy takes, from the deploy screen’s own times
- Your balance and how long it lasts at what you run now
- Why a database or project stopped and how to fix it
It opens, since its October update
Its rules
Prices, balances and status come from your account, worked out by our code. When a model writes an answer to a general question, it is marked Written by AI and carries no price. Up to 30 questions every 10 minutes per person.
Here's a managed PostgreSQL database in Mumbai, ready to set up.
Revenue by month this year (2026), from Orders.
Highest: August 2026, $12,400. Lowest: January 2026, $3,150.
SELECT date_trunc('month', (t."created_at" AT TIME ZONE 'UTC')) AS "time", (SUM(amount) FILTER (WHERE status = 'paid') / 100.0) AS "revenue" FROM "public"."orders" AS t WHERE (t."created_at" AT TIME ZONE 'UTC') >= '2026-01-01 00:00:00' AND (t."created_at" AT TIME ZONE 'UTC') < '2027-01-01 00:00:00' GROUP BY 1 ORDER BY "time" ASC The statement the read-only account ran. It carries the values in your question.
Ran today at 14:03 on orders-db
Talk to Database, inside Ask AI
Ask your PostgreSQL.
The AI never sees a row.
Owners and admins ask a managed PostgreSQL database questions in their own words and get a sentence, a chart, a table and the SQL. A model only picks names from a file you approved. Our code writes the SQL and runs it read-only, as an account fenced to that file.
- The starter file is made from table and column names, never a row
- You approve the file. It is all the model reads
- Rows and SQL never reach the model
The MCP server, in your editor
Let your editor’s agent
do the work.
The Selfhost.dev MCP server gives Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Devin Desktop or any MCP client 216 tools across 32 modules: create and resize managed databases, restore one to a point in time, manage users and backups, create projects and deploy apps. Every tool is a real API call. Destructive operations need explicit confirmation.
$ claude mcp add selfhost -- npx @selfhost.dev/mcp-server {
"mcpServers": {
"selfhost": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@selfhost.dev/mcp-server"]
}
}
} The first run opens your browser to sign in. Your credentials stay on your machine, readable only by you.
Not in the MCP server yet
The SQL editor, Index Advisor, app upgrades, support, deleted-project restores and resizing a project’s server live in the console for now. So do Kafka clusters.
Someone deleted rows from orders-db at about 14:40 UTC. Restore it to 14:30 into a new database.
I'll find orders-db and check how far back it can be restored.
● list_instances
orders-db postgres running awsinst_3f9c2e81a07b45d6c912
● get_pitr instance_id: "awsinst_3f9c2e81a07b45d6c912"

● restore_pitr target_time: "2026-10-31T14:30:00Z", name: "orders-db-1430", confirm: false
About to RESTORE instance awsinst_3f9c2e81a07b45d6c912 to 2026-10-31T14:30:00Z. This creates a NEW instance (same engine as the source, Postgres or MySQL) named orders-db-1430 and starts provider charges. The source instance is untouched. Call again with confirm=true to proceed.
This creates a new database, orders-db-1430, as orders-db was at 14:30 UTC. Its charges start with it. orders-db stays as it is. Go ahead?
yes
● restore_pitr confirm: true
Restore started. The new instance orders-db-1430 will appear on the dashboard once provisioning + WAL replay completes.
Started. orders-db-1430 shows up in your databases when the restore finishes.

and what it cannot.
Every line below is how the product behaves today, not a policy we hope to keep. What we send to AI model providers and how long we keep it is in our privacy policy.
Ask AI never acts on its own
Nothing is created, deployed or deleted from a reply. Its cards open the screen with the details filled in. You press the button there.
No figure goes to a model
Prices, balances and status are worked out by our code from your account, so a number in a reply is the number the screen shows.
Written answers are marked
When a model writes an answer to a general question, it says Written by AI and carries no price, promise or link.
Rows never reach a model
Talk to Database sends a model your question and the names in your approved file. The rows go to your browser.
Read-only, fenced to your file
Talk to Database runs as a read-only account that can read only the tables and columns your file lists.
The MCP server asks first
Destructive operations need explicit confirmation. The server never connects to your databases directly.
