Visual Design Intern
We are looking for a Visual Design Intern who thinks beyond simply making things look good. Someone who naturally asks: “How should this look and communicate?”
You’ll work closely with the engineering, marketing and design teams to shape how Selfhost.dev looks and communicates across its marketing website, blog, social and other visual touchpoints.
Your primary focus will be the Selfhost.dev marketing website, improving its visual language, layouts, hierarchy, consistency and overall quality, along with creating visual assets for blog posts, LinkedIn content, campaigns and other marketing initiatives.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys thinking about visual language, branding, graphics, typography, composition, hierarchy and communication and wants to understand how these elements work together to build a strong product brand.
What you'll do
- Design and improve the Selfhost.dev marketing website.
- Create and refine website sections, landing pages, banners, illustrations, visual systems and other marketing assets.
- Identify visual inconsistencies and opportunities to improve the website's overall quality and brand experience.
- Design creative visuals for blog posts, social media posts, announcements, campaigns and other marketing content.
- Translate ideas, concepts and written content into clear and engaging visual communication.
- Develop visual treatments that make technical concepts easier and more interesting to understand.
- Maintain consistency and follow the design system, i.e. typography, spacing, layouts, imagery, graphics, colors and other visual elements.
- Contribute to evolving and documenting the visual language and design system.
- Work with the marketing and design teams to understand the purpose behind each piece of communication before designing it.
- Create reusable visual components and templates that make future marketing design faster and more consistent.
You'll be a fit if
- You instinctively think “How should this look and communicate?” rather than simply “What should I make?”
- You have a strong eye for visual hierarchy, composition, typography, spacing and balance.
- You understand that visual design is about communication, not decoration.
- You can take a complex or abstract idea and turn it into a simple, understandable visual.
- You notice small visual inconsistencies that others might overlook.
- You care about the details but can also understand the bigger picture.
- You can work within an existing brand while still finding ways to improve and evolve it.
- You are comfortable receiving feedback, explaining your design decisions and iterating on your work.
- You have an understanding of how different visual choices affect perception, clarity, trust and brand personality.
- You are curious about branding, SaaS, technology, developer products and digital products.
- You are comfortable working independently and taking ownership of visual improvements.
- You have a strong willingness to learn and experiment.
